Cornea & Refractive Surgery

The objective of this program is to train ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and management of corneal diseases and cataract through

  • Clinical evaluation
  • Use of different investigative procedures
  • Medical treatment
  • Surgical intervention
  • Research

The following are the areas and techniques where the training is imparted

Clinical Diagnostics:

Slit Lamp, Keratometry, Biomicrocsopy, Pachymetry, Specular Microscopy, A- B Scan, Tear Film function tests.

Laboratory Diagnosis:

Microbiology: Smear preparation, culture methodology and interpretation of various corneal infections including bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic.

Pathology: Preparation and interpretation of specimens from various corneal pathologies including scars, edema, dystrophies, infections and degenerations

Immunology: Understanding various techniques, immunohistocytochemistry, serology, etc.

Medical Treatment:

As a part of fellowship fellows are also taught about the management of following.

  • Corneal infections
  • Corneal immunological disorders
  • Dry eye and ocular surface disorders
  • Degenerations and dystrophies
  • Complications of keratoplasty
  • Complications of cataract surgery

Microsurgical Techniques

  • Keratoplasty
  • Small Incision Cataract Surgery
  • Phacoemulsification
  • Surgery for congenital cataract
  • Ocular surface reconstruction (limbal grafts, amniotic membrane grafts)
  • Pterygium surgery
  • Tissue adhesive application
  • Patch grafts
  • Superficial Keratectomy
  • Trauma surgery
  • The Cataract surgery training will be imparted for a specific period in the training OR and the other surgeries are taught during the posting with faculty

Stipends

All the long term fellows will be paid a stipend of INR 40,000/- per months.

Prerequisites

MS/MD/DNB in Ophthalmology

Intake

Batch starts in January and July every year (No of candidates intake will depend on the slot availability)
